Victim of Thursday I-86 Motorcycle Identified
The identity of the victim of a fatal collision on I-86 Thursday was revealed yesterday. The victim was identified as 30-year-old Horseheads man Shawn Stanton. Stanton was traveling west on motorcycle as he attempted to change lanes, causing him to crash into the side of a pickup truck and trailer also heading westbound in the passing lane. Police continue their investigation and ask anyone that might have witnessed the accident to contact them at 607-739-5669. Yesterday, a second accident occurred this week on I-86 Eastbound near the Watkins Glen/Corning exit involving a tractor-trailer. More details about this story will emerge as the investigation continues. 

 

County Legislators to Approve Algae Bloom Study Funding Monday
On Monday Steuben County legislators will be asked to approve additional funding for an algae bloom study in the Keuka Lake watershed. The three-year, $5,200 study is in the second year of the project through the Keuka Lake Association (KLA) to sample key streams for pollutants and develop a nine-point plan to combat harmful blooms in the lake and surrounding bodies of water. The KLA will be eligible for funds from the EPA to better prevent algae blooms, once this plan has been finished. Steuben and Yates counties will split the cost of the study, with the county Economic Development Fund covering Steuben’s $2,600 share. The County Legislature Monday morning at 10am will also discuss Extreme Winter Recovery Funding from the state to use in county road repair and maintenance work, a possible class-action lawsuit regarding alleged misconduct related to certain generic drugs, and agreement to the required New York State Department of Environmental Conservation review of the closed landfill in Wayland.

 

Heat Warning Continues This Evening
An excessive heat warning continues in effect until 8 p.m. tonight. The Heat Index Value could reach 110 today. Heat and humidity can cause heat illnesses during outdoor exertion or extended exposure. Prolonged heat is most dangerous for young children and the elderly. Car temperatures can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. Temperatures will remain very warm and muggy, preventing non air conditioned buildings from cooling off.

 

I-86 Bridge Repair Over Post Creek Starts Monday
The New York State Department of Transportation announced today that bridge repair work will begin on Interstate 86 over Post Creek, in both the eastbound and westbound directions, on Monday.  This bridge is located approximately one-half mile east of State Route 414 in the City of Corning. Work will consist of structural lifting and bearing replacement, concrete abutment repair and minor drainage work. For most of the work, two lanes of traffic will be maintained.  Occasional daytime lane closures may be needed during structural lifting and material delivery. Work is anticipated to last approximately two months, weather permitting.

 

Bridge Work on I086 Avoca Begins Monday
The New York State Department of Transportation announced that bridge joint replacement work will begin on Interstate 86 westbound over the Cohocton River in the town of Avoca on Monday. For the duration of this work, one lane of traffic will be maintained.  Work is anticipated to last approximately two weeks, weather permitting. Meanwhile, bridge joint replacement work will resume Monday on Interstate 86 eastbound over County Route 333 in the town of Campbell. For the duration of this work, one lane of traffic will be maintained.  Work is anticipated to last approximately two weeks, weather permitting.
