Steuben Co. Annex at a Glance:
A plan stretching back at least 10 years reached completion Thursday when the Steuben County Annex officially opened. Originally considered as a way to allow the public convenient access to related county services, over time the plan developed to respond to state mandates that expanded court-related functions and federal requirements for elections. The 20,000 square-foot annex will house the county Board of Elections offices and electronic voting machines, and records storage on the first floor. Cornell Cooperative Extension Steuben County, a demonstration kitchen, and a conference center will be located on the second floor. The building also has 10,000 additional square-feet for growth.
Dansville Man Gets 10 Years for Role in Meth Ring:
A Dansville man, convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, will serve 120 months in prison. Between January 2017 and April 2017, 53-year-old Donald McKinney conspired with others to ship high purity crystal methamphetamine from suppliers in California into Dansville, where it was then distributed. He sold the methamphetamine to co-conspirator, Kurt Redance, who in turn distributed it to others, including sales at The Boneyard, an auto salvage business in Dansville. McKinney is one of seven defendants charged in this methamphetamine conspiracy. All seven have been convicted.
Gov. Cuomo Announces $45M in Funding to Improve Emergency Communications:
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $45 million in state grant funding has been awarded to 57 counties and New York City for emergency communications. The funding will enable local governments to expand their emergency response capabilities to enhance public safety operations. Steuben County is set to receive $776,687.
Voter Registration Scam:
The New York State Board of Elections is reminding residents that the B.O.E. will never call you asking to register to vote over the phone after a voter registration scam has been reported. The calls have been reported in Chemung and Steuben Counties with the caller asking to register the recipient to vote in an attempt to gain personal information. Also, the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming November 6th general election is today in New York State.
Road Work in Hammondsport:
The Village of Hammondsport has announced that the following streets will see temporary closures over the next few days for slurry sealing: William, Wheeler, Davis, Curtis, Grape, Thorpe, Vine, Myrtle, Orchard, and Lake Street from Main to the Village Line. The roads are expected to be closed for approximately 45 minutes. It will take two to three days to complete all the work, weather permitting.
Social Security Announces 2.8% Benefit Increase for 2019:
Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 67 million Americans will increase 2.8 percent in 2019, the Social Security Administration announced Thursday. The 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2019. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31st 2018. Social Security and SSI beneficiaries are normally notified by mail in early December about their new benefit amount. This year, for the first time, most people who receive Social Security payments will be able to view their COLA notice online through their my Social Security account at http://www.socialsecurity.gov.
Survey Issued for Volunteer Firefighters:
New York State Fire Coordinators, a professional non-profit organization for firefighters, has issued a survey for all volunteer firefighters in the state of New York. The goal is to identify the scope of the recruitment problem and to develop a strategy to address the staffing issue. According to the National Fire Protection Association, since 1983, the U.S. has seen a drop of nearly 70,000 volunteer firefighters. The survey should be completed by October 31st. A report of the data will be presented at upcoming conferences and meetings.
