New Steps to Fight Opioid Abuse/Addiction in NYS:
New York State is taking new steps to help fight opioid abuse and addiction. Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced legislation that looks to add 11 fentanyl analogs to the controlled substances schedule, giving law enforcement the ability to go after dealers who manufacture and sell, and raising the amount of Naloxone doses covered in insurance plans. Naloxone is often used to help addicts recover, and as fentanyl can be up to 50 times more powerful than heroin, it can take multiple doses of naloxone to reverse a fentanyl overdose.
Setback for Opponents of Seneca Lake LPG Storage:
A setback has been issued for opponents of the proposal to store liquid petroleum gas in depleted salt caverns near Seneca Lake. In a filing dated September 8th, an administrative law judge issued a ruling that there is no need for further hearings on the issues raised by “Gas Free Seneca” and similar groups. The document states that “petitioners fail to raise any adjudicable issues.” Reportedly, Gas Free Seneca expects to appeal the ruling to the DEC. They have until October 20th to do so.
No Charges to be Filed in Fatal Waneta Lake Accident:
The investigation by the Schuyler County District Attorney’s Office into a boating death on Waneta Lake in August has concluded, and D.A. Joe Fazzary says that it was a tragic accident and no charges will be filed. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 17-year-old Owen Thomas, of Brighton, died after falling overboard around 8 p.m. on August 10th. Two other people were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Public Input Sought on Former Corning Hospital Cleanup:
The public is being invited to comment on the proposed cleanup of the former Corning Hospital on East Denison Parkway. The proposed remedy involves several steps, to include excavation and off-site disposal of fill material having hazardous characteristics and the construction of a site-wide cover system. An investigation discovered some groundwater contamination as well as several metal compounds in the soil. Project documents are available at the Southeast Steuben County Library in Corning. The DEC will accept comments until November 10th.
Reminder – Bath Traffic, Parking Changes for Sunday’s Wineglass Marathon:
The Wineglass marathon is Sunday and Bath police chief Chad Mullen says there will be temporary parking restrictions on several local streets. In addition, Mullen said there will also be temporary changes in traffic lane patterns on West Washington Street and East Steuben Streets. Enforcement of the parking restrictions will begin at 6 a.m. Sunday…just look for the signs, police say.
Caton Seeking Speed Change on Whiskey Creek Rd.:
The Steuben County Traffic Safety Board meets today in Bath. One item on the agenda is correspondence from the Town of Caton, which is requesting a speed reduction on Whiskey Creek Road.

Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Members 18 and older will be able to receive flu shots without prescriptions or appointments. The cost is covered by most major insurance companies. Credit cards accepted.
